Article III of the Lusaka Agreement mandates ARIPO to establish schemes for the training of staff in the administration of intellectual property laws; organize training seminars and other meetings on intellectual property matters and promote the exchange of ideas and experience as well as conduct research studies in the field of intellectual property.  It is for these reasons that the establishment of the a Regional Training Centre was considered essential to provide a broad-based capacity building activities with a view to promoting the intellectual property system in the member states and enable for the development of the critical mass needed for the effective utilization of the intellectual property tools for socio-economic development and wealth creation.

The ARIPO Regional Training Centre was therefore established in 2006. It  was officially opened on February15, 2006, by the Vice President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Her Excellency, Cde Joyce Mujuru under the name, ARIPO Regional Training Centre. In 2010, the ARIPO Regional Training Centre became the ARIPO Academy.
